나는 순수한 자신의 선택과 의지, 그리고 이를 억압하거나 방해하는 보이지 않는 힘에 대해 관심을 가지고 있다. 이는 미지의 생명을 만드는 작업의 근간이 되었고 이를 통해 평면 작업과 현장설치 작업, 다른 예술가와의 협업 등 다양한 방법으로 작업을 펼치고 있다.
미지의 생명은 의식과 무의식이 교차하는 지점에서 태어나고 자란다. 최소한의 기본적인 재료로 스케치 없이 기존에 없는 형상들을 만들고 생명을 부여하여 증식시켜 나간다. 의식 깊숙이 숨어있던 미지의 생명들은 나의 부름을 받아 동물이나 식물을 닮은 모습들로 나타난다. 그들이 자라는 과정은 경험으로부터 연상된 이미지들이 살을 붙여 나가는 무의식의 흐름으로 이루어진다. 숨어있던 이미지의 파편들이 의식과 무의식의 경계에서 슬그머니 나타나서 생각지도 못했던 기이한 생물의 형상으로 자라간다. 마치 쭉정이처럼 변형된 이러한 형태들은 견고하고 기계적인 사회의 질서에 잘 적응하지 못하여 안식처와 일탈을 꿈꾸며 변이(變異)하는 몸부림의 모습이기도 하다.이 꿈틀거리는 몸부림은 유기적 구조를 지니면서도 이물(異物)스러워서 그로테스크한 이미지로 드러난다. 그들은 무(無)의 공간에서 시작되어 우연성에 의한 예측할 수 없는 증식을 통해 형상화된다. 손이 가는 대로 그리는 이 형상은 완성된 형태를 계획하는 스케치나 드로잉 없이 시작된다. 나의 작업은 의식이 소멸하는 지점에서 미지의 생명체가 임의적으로 생성되고 이들이 이어달리기를 하듯이 연상 작용이 거듭해서 일어나는 과정이다. 이를 통해 방향성마저 예측할 수 없는 수많은 생장점이 생겨나고 미지의 생명체는 이 생장점을 통해 끝없이 증식한다.
화면 위에 발견된 이 생명체의 형상들은 우연히 발견된 결과물이자 또 다른 결과물을 만들어 가는 원인이기도 하다. 형상이 형상을 만들어 가는 원인과 결과의 순환은 스스로 증식하는 듯 지속적인 과정을 반복한다. 형상에 의해 생식하며 성장하는 유형생식을 하고 이들이 성장해 나가는 증식의 방법은 방향과 크기가 결정되어 있지 않은 임의적인 방식으로 펼쳐진다.
이들의 형상은 유기적으로 분열, 증식, 성장하여 활발하게 활동하는 모습의 개체가 된다. 개체로 형성되는 모든 과정은 실제 생명의 성장과 닮아 있어 이렇게 형성된 개체를 미지의 새로운 생명체로 바라보게 되었다. 즉, 의식을 넘어 서는 시점에서 나는 이들이 자율성을 가진 생명체로 보이기 시작하였고 동시에 이들을 바라보는 관찰자가 된다. 나는 이들을 바라볼 때 마치 창조자가 된 느낌마저 든다. 나는 그들을 바라보는 관찰자이기도 하고 의식 너머 그들을 불러오는 주술사이기도 하며 그들을 만드는 작업자이기도 하다. 수축과 이완, 집합과 발산을 반복하며 숨을 쉬고 성장해 나가는 이들의 모습을 나는 부르고, 바라보며, 만들고 있다.
이와 같이 자율성을 가진 생명의 속성에 대한 관심으로 다양한 작업을 할 수 있었다. 모듈성을 가진 여러 부분을 조립하며 확장하여 나가는 평면작업과 권력화된 이미지를 이용하여 변성하는 작업, 실재 공간 안에서 공간의 조건과 성격을 이용하여 보이지 않은 존재를 드러내는 작업 그리고 다른 작가들과 제 3의 결과물을 기대하며 프로젝트를 한 협업작업 등 다양한 형식의 그리기에 대한 실험을 하며 작업을 하고 있다.
Artist note
I have an interest in my pure choices and will and the invisible power that suppresses or hinders it. It has become the basis of the work of creating unknown life, and it is working in various ways such as plane work, field installation work, collaboration with other artists.
The unknown life is born and grows up at the place where consciousness and unconsciousness cross each other. Unknown life hiding deep in unconsciousness appears in shapes resembling animals or plants upon my call. Their growing process is like a flow of unconsciousness to add fresh to the images reminded from past experiences. Fragments of the hidden image slip into the boundary between consciousness and unconsciousness to grow up in strange shapes of life. The transformed shapes cannot be adapted to the solid and mechanical social order as if struggling to transform dreaming a rest and deviation. The struggle has a grotesque image as it is organic and alien. Then it is configured through unpredictable proliferation by contingency beginning from the space of nothing. The shape drawn as hands go begins without a sketch or drawing that plans a complete shape. It is randomly created at the point where consciousness lapses and then continues to proliferate through a lot of growing points of which direction cannot be predicted through constant associations.
The shapes of these creatures are also the result of chance discoveries and other outcomes. The cause and effect of the shape that makes the shape repeats itself as it grows itself. Growing and Reproduction by Shape The breeding methods in which they reproduce and grow are unfolded in an arbitrary way in which direction and size are not determined.
The shape is an object that splits up, proliferates, grows up and becomes active in an organic way. All processes to be the object resemble those of a real life so that the object is regarded as an unknown new life. In other words, at the point over consciousness, I began to see it as autonomous life as being an observer at the same time. I feel like a creator when watching it. I am an observer, a conjurer who calls it up, and a worker who makes it at the same time. I call, see and make the shape that grows up and breathe while repeating contraction, relaxation, collection and diffusion.
